Self-Confidence And Self-Esteem
The dictionary explains self-confidence as: ‘Belief that one is right on something or that one is able to do something’. As long as you think that you are right, or think you can do certain things, you have confidence. Self -confidence is believed to be one of life’s most precious qualities that lead to success and happiness.
R.Marton, the founder of American Success Studies, said that the size of your success is always smaller than your confidence. There is no way to be successful without looking forward to the future believing strongly you will succeed. If you want to succeed, you must gain self -confidence first. If you are lack self-confidence, your power will be greatly abated.
Self-confident people usually have similar characteristics. First of all, they like themselves, and are comfortable in their own skin. There is a common problem with young people who lack self-confidence – they do not fully accept themselves, and not able to like themselves. Studies have shown that young girls and boys have different feelings when stood in front of a mirror. The boys look harshly at themselves, while the girls concern about what others see. Although the sexes are different, both boys and girls equally look upon themselves and judge. Some people do not like what they see.
So, it is important to like yourself? Psychologists tell us that unless we really like ourselves, we cannot truly love others. We can begin to hate everything and everyone – borne out of one’s own personal frustration and deep sense of self-disgust. An important indicator of mental health is to be able to like yourself and accept yourself.
The first step to loving yourself is to no longer judge yourself with others’ criterion, but establish your own values. Then put these values into practice in your life. Also you must learn to accept your shortcomings and reduce unnecessary self-blame. Everyone has his own strengths, and we also have our own shortcomings. As a social being, we live in a society borne from learning the strengths and weaknesses of ourselves and others. But we shouldn’t feel inferior because of some of our personal shortcomings – perhaps someone else just envies us in other aspects.
As we accumulate more and more knowledge, we can reflect on ourselves, and have a more appropriate, comprehensive self-evaluation. Accept yourself in your own eyes, and others will accept you. Liking yourself allows you to show your true self-confidence in front of others, and you will be pleasantly surprised to find that you feel better each day. Because you accept yourself and others at the same time, they will take you in.
Confidence also comes from practice. It is a state of mind, as long as you believe in yourself, then you can handle everything at ease. Some people think too much before attempting something, they lack confidence, and don’t dare to practice. They always think about imaginary problems and difficulties, but not the advantages, so their self-confidence gradually disappears.
In these cases, one should bear the source of self-confidence in mind, “Instead of thinking – do”. In this way one can gradually establish self-confidence.
